America Punishes Russian Oil Buyers, While Using Russian Uranium?
America says it wants to punish Russia economically. It pressures countries that buy Russian oil, threatens tariffs, and talks about sanctions in the name of stopping money from reaching Moscow.
But here is the contradiction: the United States itself has relied on Russian uranium for its nuclear energy sector.
In 2024, the U.S. passed the Prohibiting Russian Uranium Imports Act, which bans Russian low-enriched uranium imports starting August 11, 2024. But the law also allows waivers and limited exceptions through the end of 2027 if there are supply concerns or national interest reasons. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission also confirms that Russian uranium imports are prohibited unless the Secretary of Energy grants a waiver.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, Russian-origin uranium still accounted for 4% of uranium deliveries to U.S. civilian nuclear power reactors in 2024, while most uranium used by U.S. reactors came from foreign suppliers.
At the same time, the Trump administration imposed tariffs on India over its continued purchase of Russian oil, saying the goal was to pressure Russia economically. The White House described those tariffs as a response to India’s continued purchase of Russian Federation oil.
So the question is simple: how can the U.S. punish other countries for buying Russian oil, while creating exceptions for Russian uranium when America needs it?
